Thanks to @comex, there is a really easy way to jailbreak iPad 2. For those who do not know, Jailbreak is a way to ‘unlock’ the operating system of your iDevice. On a standard iDevice like an iPad, iPhone or an iPod Touch, you will not be able to download and install applications from anywhere but the iTunes App Store. This not only limits the user’s ability to install applications but also allowed Apple to unilaterally decide what was right or wrong for the users.
After THIS, everyone was free to Jailbreak their devices and use other App Stores like Cydia to install applications to it. Apple has tried all that it can to deter this circumvention, but the iPhone-Dev team has been kinda winning this cat-mouse game.

For the iPad 2, this jailbreak was pretty late. Apple had secured iPad 2 pretty well and some even said that the iPad 2 jailbreak may never come. Not until a couple of days ago, when @comex announced that it was ready, after the glitch where a beta tester had leaked the unfinished Jailbreak to the world.

For the iPad 2, here are the steps:

Ensure that you have Internet connectivity on your iPad, via WiFi or 3G.

Go to Settings -> General -> About and note the ‘Version’ from there. It should be 4.3.3. If Yes, skip to step 11.

If the Version is less than 4.3.3, please search Google for ‘Download iPad 2 ipsw 4.3.3‘. The first search result that you find should be good enough, (limera1n.cc or redmondpie).

Choose the File corresponding to your iPad (WiFi, WiFi+3G, CDMA/GSM). Remember, selecting the wrong file may result in another download! No other harm will be caused as iTunes will not restore it to your device.

Connect your iPad to your computer and start iTunes.

iTunes will connect to your device. iTunes will tell you that an update for your device is available. Ignore this advise at the moment.

Right click on the device in the left pane and select backup, just in case something nasty happened.

Once the backup is complete, select the device once again in the left pane. You will see the home screen of the device, with the option to ‘Check for Update’ and ‘Restore’.

Press ‘Shift’ and click ‘Restore’ of you are on Windows, or ‘Option’ and click ‘Restore’ if on Mac. Choose your recently downloaded ipsw and let the restore begin.

Once the restore is done, eject your device from the computer.

Check that Internet is active on the iPad.

Open Safari and type http://www.jailbreakme.com in the address bar.

You will see a button ‘Free’ on left side of the screen.

Touch the button. It will turn in a green Install button. Tough it again.

Safari will automatically close at this time. Don’t Worry. Your Job is done!

Somewhere on the Home Screen, you will find the Brown Cydia icon, installed or downloading.

You Are Freed!

Post questions if you have and I will be glad to assist where I can.

This information is posted as is, and is for educational purpose. Please check your local laws before you Jailbreak your device.

After reading the story, it is clear that the company has lost what they one had, Leadership. It is both, in business and in company HQ. Nokia is facing the lender’s syndrome, you have invested so much in someone or something that you can’t let go of it now. Nokia has built a system around symbian. With the Ovi store, they tried to replicate Apple App Store and Android Market. They failed probably because they didn’t realize that the people who are buying their phones are not the ones who are interested in applications. The typical Nokia customer now is one who wants a phone with basic features, a device useful for voice communications.
Someone who has the money to spend on applications may as well buy an iPhone or a phone running Android, something that has an established ecosystem. Windows Mobile 6.5 with Titanium and what not was a flop because it didn’t have all that I want from my HD2, and more. I run Android on my phone because it gives me the power to write this post, something that I can’t do on Windows Mobile. Despite being a Windows mobile fan, I had to choose Android because it has the flexibility and expandibility to adapt to my needs.
Nokia needs to rethink and probably drop MeeGo and symbian.

On 20th January’11, Indian mobile phone subscriber got a new service, MNP or Mobile Number Portability. It is the latest service offered to the Indian Telecom Subscribers, which allows them to retain their mobile number and move the service to a new provider.

This means that the mobile phone subscriber can now say goodbye to bad customer service, call drops, unwanted services, spam sms, marketing calls etc from their existing provider and move to a new and better (!) service provider.

“Now you can leave the pirates and join the thieves!” is what a user pointed out on twitter!

I think it is true to a great extent. All the service providers are marketing their 3G services. It is almost impossible to find out if your city is covered in their list (important if you live in a small city), except one provider that has a list, surprisingly Reliance! They are all promising high-speed internet and giving you an option to check if your handset supports 3G, but none of them tells you that your city may not yet be covered with 3G service. So much for their Advertising Standards!

Well, for all those who are still planning to move to a new provider, or planning to change between CDMA and GSM, here is the information. And yes, you can port a CDMA number to a GSM provider, which means that a number from Reliance/Tata/Virgin/MTS can be used on Airtel/Vodafone/Idea/Tata/Aircel etc. and vice-versa.

SMS –

PORT <10 Digit Mobile Number>

to 1900.

You will receive a UPC, Unique Porting Code, which you will use as an identifier with your new provider. Walk into the store of the new provider of your choice, ask for a Customer Application Form, fill in the form and provide the UPC. You will need a Photograph, Address and Identity Proof.

Once you have done this, you will receive a new SIM card and you will have to clear the complete billed/un-billed outstanding with your old provider. Your new provider will let you know once the port is ready. You will get an SMS on the old SIM, to inform you to replace your old SIM with the new SIM in the phone. This process should take no more than 7 working days.

Remember, you will need a new phone if you are changing your service from GSM to CDMA or vice versa.

Happy Porting and Calling on the New Provider!

I have been using the MacBook Pro for about a month now. It is a good machine and the most amazing part is of course the fact that it says I can use it for over 10 hours on a single charge. I am running Boot Camp on it and installed Windows 7, which I thought (think!) was the most amazing OS. When I boot in Windows, it says that I can use the machine for only 3 hours, whereas on OSX I have used it for over 8 hours comfortably.

This is about the software that I installed on the machine. I have heard a lot of people complain that there aren’t enough software for Mac. I had similar apprehensions about the Mac when I bought it. I have been using it for a few days now and I now know the most important software that you may want for your Mac.

Begin with MS Office. No doubt there is no other application that can even come close to it, even on a Mac. I downloaded the trial version of iWork and instantly realized that this was not what I could work with. I am used to working with my words, numbers and presentations in particular manner. I cannot change it instantly. I think I found it easier to work with iWork but simple things like different common shortcuts made me download and purchase the Office for Mac instantly. Highly Recommended.

Browsers. You cannot ignore Chrome. Google may be called evil or anything but the browser works flawlessly in Mac. However, if you are a download junkie like me, you will have to get another amazing browser, which is the most extensible and safe browser, Firefox. I didn’t find any good extension like FlashGot to pass all the RapidShare links to PSD.

Downloader. Progressive Downloader is the best application to download large files. It is like any other download manager for Windows, integrated very well with Mac. I like the interface and the ease of use. The best part is that it monitors clipboard and will start download automatically when a link is clicked at.

Compression. While there are inbuilt mechanism for unarchiving files, get The Unarchiver. It makes life a lot easier. I would say a must have.

VLC Player. No explanation needed, but if you still want one – the best audio video player available out there, IMHO. Yes, it plays avi!

uTorrent. If you don’t already know, stay away from it.

Instant Messengers. While Adium is a good option, I would also recommend Nimbuzz. I use Nimbuzz on my phone and I have been very happy. It connects to all popular services, with the option to make calls to Landline and Mobile phones.

EDIT: With inputs from Shishir Sharma

If you are on Twitter then you can follow me @ranaonline and also install Tweetie for Mac. This is one of the best applications for using Twitter on Mac. The other options like Tweetdeck or Twitterrific are also worth a look, however if you want simplicity, Tweetie should be your choice.

If you miss your note-book while working on your notebook, you can save some paper with SlidePad. It is a simple application, which slides from the left side of the screen once installed. It helps you take notes in the meetings without any distraction and without eating any screen space. The only problem may be that it might stick out when you don’t want it to, but that’s a small price to pay for a free and very useful tool!

Thanks Shishir for introducing me to these two!

After 25 years of being a Windows Fanboy, I finally got my MacBook Pro. While it was a very big decision for me, I believe it will pay off in the long run. I have been using software from the Windows family as my primary OS and I have always loved it. I love my Windows PC and I know that the options available for a Windows PC may be much more than those for a Mac. I had always seen people working on a Mac when I traveled and I thought it was not a great idea to get one for me because I had never worked on one. Also, I had read at quite a few places that a Mac is an all new experience for a Windows user and may not be easy to use for someone making the move.

‘All New Experience’! Well the thought caught on me and I decided I WILL use a Mac, even if it was a low powered one, unlike my current quad-core 6 GB 16″ HP laptop. I was now looking for an opportunity to buy a Mac and one such presented me when I was in Canada for a family vacation. The family friend we were visiting had not one but two MacBooks. They had recently released a compilation of their music, working solely out of Garageband. I was impressed.

I decided to pay a visit to the nearest Apple Store, which was in the huge West Edmonton Mall, and I was amazed. The Apple store was pretty and full, usual, I was told. We entered and started to explore our options. There was the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. I has already started liking what I saw. I decided that I will buy the 13″ as I was planning to use it primarily as a mobile device and not as a replacement of my desktop. Also, I was not sure if I would be able to use it very well and so I thought I would spend only a reasonable amount on it.

The machine was for CAD 1250 and Apple was kind enough to give a CAD100 discount to students. The Genius, who was helping us buy our Mac also told us that we could get an iPod worth CAD219for free if we applied for the rebate. I didn’t refuse!

So here I am, with my all new MacBook Pro, working with all new set of software and still trying to come to terms with things like multitouch! I am sure with a little training and some googling, I will be able to use this as my primary machine. I will also post more from this experience, starting with the list of software that I installed first on the Mac to port my work from a PC.

I have moved to Android on my HD2 since last one month. The wonderful guys at XDA-Developers have rooted android and ported it to HD2 from HTC Desire, and now it is in a position to be used as the daily build on the phone. In fact I have not thought once about changing back to Windows Mobile ever since I got my hands on Android.

The first time I actually saw an Android phone was in April 2010, when I had a chance to see the Motorola Droid at AdTech in San Francisco. I found it to be very confusing when compared to my awesome HTC Sense interface on HTC HD2. I have been a die hard fan of Windows Mobile and to think of any other OS was taboo for me. I used the Nokia E71 for some time and I found the stupid Samsung Omnia i900 better. When I compared Android with Windows Mobile, I thought it was still work in progress. Having said that, the adventurer in me still provoked me to try Android but my wallet didn’t allow for a change of the phone in less than 6 months, when we were talking about more than $800!

I was tracking the project on XDA, where the super developers were trying to port Android to the best phone of times, the HD2. I finally learned that a port was available where voice calls weren’t available. I went ahead and downloaded the build and ran android on the phone for the first time. It was not even close to a beta but I searched a bit more to find www.gamesquare.co.uk, where there were usable builds of Android for HD2. I immediately changed the build, which only meant replacing the Android folder on the SD card.

Android has become my choice of OS on the phone now. Initially there have been problems like a robotic voice and high echo to the other party receiving the call, I have even used a tape to cover the mic because the sound was too high. The development of android was faster than one could expect and there was soon a well designed build available for daily use. The only problem was high battery drain, a full charge would last for about 6 hours under normal usage.

SetCPU solved this problem as well. It is a program that sets the clock of CPU according to your usage and requirement, to ensure that you do not waste battery when the phone is idle. The mail application connects to Gmail, Google Apps Accounts and any other company Exchange account with ease. During the time of writing this post, I heard that Microsoft released Exchange ActiveSync for Windows Live Mail (aka Hotmail) but as the website rightly says, there is still an issue with connecting to m.hotmail.com for PUSH updates.

So much for Android at the moment. I will be glad to share more details once I continue using it for a longer period.

Windows Mobile and HTC make the best phone combination, which is difficult for any other company to match. I got an HD2 as a gift sometime back and I have been in love with the machine. It has a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which is the fastest available at the moment. Add to it the half gig RAM, which is one full gig in some versions, and you have a phone faster than my some laptops available in the market.
The icing on the cake however is the HTC sense interface, which makes the otherwise dull Windows Mobile intuitive and interesting. HTC sense that is a part of these phones is called Manila and it is in it’s version 3 as far as I remember. It is a set of screens, which help you in doing your commonly used tasks on the phone like messaging, tweeting, Facebook surfing, email access, weather and stock reports etcetera. This makes using the phone a charm and I have been in love with it since my HTC Diamond. I have used two other HTC phones before this HD2, Diamond and 3300. I loved the fact that Windows Mobile could access Hotmail and other Windows Live Mail accounts in real-time, like blackberry. This was the only reason I bought WinMo because a Blackberry and the service cost seemed too expensive at that time.
I was happy with my WinMo and the fact that I could change the phone at any time, well virtually, with a new flavor of WinMo, thanks to XDA-developers. This is one of the most active and most amazing community support system a company can dream of. I visit XDA developers website more times in a day than I opened HTC site in my entire life. This community introduced me to something more exciting for my phone, Android.
I found out one day that rooted Android images could be used to boot HD2 to power this device. I needed to have a big enough memory card and the courage to run a half baked operating system on my phone. Of course, I had both!!
I downloaded a folder with all the files in it, browsed it from my file manager in WinMo, ran clcrad and haret.exe and Viola! I had android on the phone. I skipped the parts where the phone didn’t boot initially and I for once thought that the phone bricked! All in all, I never imagined that the process could be that simple. Or should I say that the people worked really hard to make sure that it was simple for people like me, who had literally no knowledge of Linux or coding.
I am enjoying the seventh ROM now, with almost everything working on the phone. I can’t connect to my Ford Connection over Bluetooth to listen to songs or make phone calls, the battery life seems to be a concern and the phone responds a bit slowly at times but it is probably this particular build.
I am loving the entire Linux experience and the sheer beauty of Android. More than anything, I am enjoying the feel that I am using something entirely developed by the people for the people. I can not thank XDA team enough and I believe HTC should be exalted that people so selflessly work to make their products better.
I will be willing to help anyone who is trying to install Android on HD2. You can write in the comments and I will be glad to assist in whatever little way I can.

I received the following email about an hour ago. The sender’s name as it appeared in my inbox is Agent Thomas Green. The name is obviously a common name and a simple Google Search will reveal that this email has already done quite a few rounds. The Subject of the email is ‘Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3)’. When I received the email, I opened it because I wanted to ensure it wasn’t from a customer who had lodged a complaint (which would have been a first ever). I couldn’t stop laughing when I opened it, and I knew I had to post it here because it is worth reading, and learning from!

While I post this here, I want you to know that I know at least 3 instances where people have fallen prey to this Nigerian scam and lost their money. They feel bad not because of losing money only but more because they were well educated and knew that there is no dead relative, old banker, Iraqi General or Oil Baron who would leave money for them.

Greed!

I always found it strange that Apple locks devices even when the customers pay the full / unsubsidized price for them. All that I could think of was that it is their product. They are free to market it the way they want and there is no reason anyone should be bothered! You like it, buy it, otherwise there are more customers and more sellers! (On this note, I use ONLY Windows Mobile because I think it is the best mobile platform)

I got an iPhone because I wanted to see what is it in the phone that people don’t mind waiting in queue for weeks to buy it. I got it last November and used it for a couple of days, finally realizing that it was meant for my wife who is a casual techie. I wanted my Windows Mobile back, which meant getting the all new HTC HD2, the powerhouse!

When I heard about iOS 4, which is funnily termed as the world’s most advanced mobile OS by Apple, I wanted to see what was in there. I connected my jailbroken and unlocked phone to iTunes and it was quick to offer me the upgrade to the World’s most Advanced Mobile OS!

The *primary* features that iOS4 offers are Multitasking, Folders, FaceTime, app Platform, performance and stability, security and the fact that it works World over. Is it all that is required to make an OS the world’s most advanced mobile OS? I have been using all these (except FaceTime) on the Windows Phone platform since the first phone I bought!

I call Windows Mobile OS a platform because I think it is not an OS but actually a platform that allows people to develop on it and improve it. Any of the above features, which are a part of the OS (not hardware dependant like the phone works world over), have always been available on Windows Phone. The ability to manage apps in folders sounds as if we are getting something still in it’s infancy, Windows allows you to manage the entire file structure! You can manage all the files, applications, pictures and whatever is there on the phone in an explorer like structure.

XDA-Developers and HTC make a great software and hardware combination for the Windows platform. The fact that I can change anything, even the OS flavor on my phone, in max 30 minutes without thinking about anything, gives me the satisfaction that I own what I paid for!

I think the openness (and I have not used android yet) of Windows Phone makes me love the platform. Apple may make great products and they may be ‘cool’, I want something that works according to me and not according to the manufacturer!
